Reconstruction

Content is vital for any application involving Augmented Reality. Users do not want to rely on additional hardware for the generation of 3D models involving simple objects. The goal of this project was the interactive and instant generation of such models on off-the-shelf mobile devices. We employ robust segmentation as the basis for a shape from silhouette approach using voxel carving. This leads to a robust algorithm which can run on off-the-shelf smartphones. The result is rendered continuously during image capture for visual inspection by the user.

Note: This approach was developed at Graz University of Technology within the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Handheld Augmented Reality.
